Triple kalimitan ang presyo ng kuryente sa malalayong isla kaysa mainland. Mahal kasi gumamit ng diesel gene­rator. Hindi naman maikabit sa grid ang isla dahil sa layo. Sobrang laki ng espasyong kailangan para sa solar panels­. At itinutumba ng bagyo ang windmills.

Pero may paraan para mapamura ang kuryente sa mga kalat-kalat na isla. At ‘yun ay nasa mismong paligid nila: ang mga atoll. Inulat ng Economist ang saliksik ni Dr. Matt Lewis ng Bangor University, England.

UMAANGKAT na naman si Agriculture Sec. William Dar ng 38,695 tonelada ng isda mula China ngayong Hunyo. Butal daw ‘yon ng inotorisa niyang angkat na 60,000 tone­lada nu’ng Enero-Marso.

‘Yan na nga ba ang inaangal ng sektor ng pangisdaan. Angkat nang angkat si Dar maski may huli ang commercial­ fleets at maliliit na mangingisda, at puno ng tilapia at bangus ang fishpens at ponds. Nalulugi sila tuwing umaangkat si Dar: 62,000 tonelada nu’ng Oktubre-Disyembre at 60,000 tone­lada pa uli. Hindi naman maibenta sa palengke ang imported kaya hayan, 21,305 tonelada lang ang naisalya.

Sa kaaangkat ni Dar ng isda pati gumagawa ng feeds tumutumal ang benta. Panay din ang angkat ng mais; nalu­lugi ang mga nagtatanim.

Tuluy-tuloy din ang angkat ng poultry at pork. Lumpo na ang mga Pilipinong magmamanok, magbababoy at taga­gawa ng patuka at pakain. 

Umaangkat din ng carrots, sibuyas, broccoli, bawang, luya at prutas. Dahil bagsak-presyo mula China, hindi ma­ibenta ng Pilipino ang sariling tanim. Tinatapon na lang sa tabing kalsada ang ani.

Pati asukal inaangkat ni Dar sa kalagitnaan ng milling­ season ng mga Pilipinong magtutubo. Lugi sila — pati mag­papalay, magmamais, maggugulay, magpuprutas — dahil mahal ang pataba at pestisidyo.

Wala nang gana ang mga Pilipino magtanim, mangisda at magpalaki ng pagkaing hayop. Hindi sila tinutulungan ng Department of Agriculture. Ang baba pa ng import tariffs­ sa pag­­kain. Kaya walang pera pang-irigasyon at pampa­unlad ng sakahan, pangisdaan at paghahayop.

Napipinto ngayon ang global food crisis. Nananawagan­ si Dar sa lahat, pati taga-siyudad, na magtanim, mangisda, mag-poultry, piggery at fishpond. Bakit hindi na lang pasig­lahin ng DA ang agrikultura? Handa namang bilhin ng mga taga-siyudad ang gawang Pilipino.

Karamihan sa taga-siyudad ay bihasa sa trabahong industriya, pero walang alam sa pananim, pangisda at paghahayop. Nakatira sila sa barong-barong o high-rise. Apat ang sanhi ng krisis: pandemya, Ukraine war, climate change, mahal na krudo. Tumumal ang kalakalan ng makinaryang pananim at pangisda dahil sa COVID-19. Kumonti ang fertilizer sa mundo nu’ng linusob ng Russia ang Ukraine. Nitrogen ang pangunahing sangkap ng fertilizer. Nakukuha ‘yon sa natural gas na minimina ng dalawang bansa. Dahil sa sea blockades hindi nila maibarko ang nitrogen.

Inantala ng Russian invasion ang pagtanim ng trigo na Ukraine ang isa sa pinakamalaking producer. Binaha ang malalaking taniman ng trigo sa China habang tinuyot ang mga ‘yon ng heat wave sa India. Magkaka-shortage ng trigo sa mundo, babala ng United Nations. Babago ang tao sa ibang butil, lalo na kanin. Mag-uunahan ang mayayamang bansa na bumili ng bigas sa India; hecha-pwera ang ­pulubing Pilipinas.

Hindi makakahingi ng tulong ang Pilipinas sa mga kapit-bansang binibilhan ng bigas: Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar. Bagsak din ang ani nila. Binaling kasi ng 13 dams ng China ang tubig ng Mekong River papunta sa sariling bukirin. Natuyot tuloy ang mga palayan at palaisdaan sa Mekong delta.

Narinig niyo na marahil ang kuwento ng Elepante at Limang Bulag na Tao. Kanya-kanyang himas ang limang bulag sa iba’t-ibang bahagi ng elepante, at hinulaan kung ano ito. Isa sa kanila ay kumapa sa katawan, at sinabing pader ‘yon. May humila sa buntot at pinasyang lubid ang tangan. Ang kumapa sa tenga ay naggiit na pamaypay ang hawak. May mga katotohanang hindi natin mababago: pagka­karoon ng Dakilang Lumalang, kapanganakan at kama­tayan, kapaligiran, agham, oras at espasyo, haba at bigat­. Meron din tayong kayang baguhin: ugali, pananaw, pagtrato sa sarili, pakikitungo sa kapwa, takbo ng buhay.

Mahalaga lahat ng naranasan natin, miski malungkot at masakit. Kasama ang mga ehemplong pinakita ng iba at leksiyon na natutunan sa eskuwela, nahuhubog tayo. Walang tigil ang pagkatuto, hanggang sa huling hininga. May kasabihan pa nga na kung ano’ng hindi nakapatay sa atin ay magpapasigla pa sa atin. Halimbawa sakit, gutom, trahedya.

Natutukso akong palitan ang wakas ng aral ng ele­pante at limang bulag. Sana sa huli nilarawan at iminuwestra nila sa isa’t isa ang limang bahagi at kung saan banda ito. Kung gay’on nabuo sana nila ang imahe at kuwento na ikalulugod at ikamamangha nila.
